SPIRIT LAKE - KJ Veldman scored 27 points and Alissa Christoffer scored 22 as ninth-ranked Spirit Lake opened up the Class 3A playoffs with a 78-51 win over Sheldon on Saturday. Veldman also had nine assists and seven steals in the contest.
The Indians led 17-11 after one quarter, 42-19 at halftime and 53-34 after three quarters.
"We have to do a better job of moving our feet on defense," said Spirit Lake coach Rich Reinking. "They had 25 free throw attempts, I think, and that's way to many. But to win by 27 and still have complaints, I think that's maybe being a little picky."
Meanwhile the Indians were 13-of-22 from the free throw line led by Veldman who was 10-of-12. She also was 7-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Christoffer was 9-of14 from the field including 4-of-8 from 3-point range.
Carter Hassel and Emma Dau each chipped in fie points, Joie Veldman had four, Mackenzie Thate had three and Katy Brevik, Kendra Stokke, Bailey Loveall and Carly Ites each had two points.
Also, Loveall had 12 rebounds and Kabele had four steals.
Spirit Lake (14-8 overall) will host Sioux Center in the region semifinals at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Sioux Center defeated Unity Christian 45-27 on Saturday.
