SPIRIT LAKE - Sioux Center didn't make it easy for ninth-ranked Spirit Lake, but the Indians made their free throws in the final period to preserve a 59-56 victory in Wednesday's 3A region semifinal in Spirit Lake.
Trailing in the fourth quarter, the Warriors began fouling the Indians and then looked to get a quick basket or 3-pointer.
But Spirit Lake made 20-of-30 free throws in the final period and led by as many as eight in the final period before two late baskets by Sioux Center made the score look closer than it was.
Spirit Lake led 7-6 after a slow first quarter and 26-19 at halftime. The lead was 35-29 to start the final period.
KJ Veldman led the Indians with 22 points, 10 rebounds and two assists. That included 13-of-14 from the free throw line.
Alissa Christoffer had nine points while Emma Dau had eight, Joie Veldman had seven, Kendra Stokke and Bailey Loveall each had five, Abbey Horsman had two and Jessi Kabele had one.
The Indians finished 27-of-40 from the free throw line.
Spirit Lake (15-8 overall) travels to Algona for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday against Garner-Hayfield/Ventura. Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (16-7) defeated Osage 49-35 on Wednesday.
