DES MOINES -Spirit Lake Park's Doug Miner took the first step to a third straight state wrestling title by winning his opening 120-pound match on Thursday. Teammate Zach Skopec (138) also pinned his first opponent to advance to today's quarterfinals. Both Miner and Skopec are ranked second at their respective weights.
Meanwhile ninth-ranked Kenten Murray (145) was pinned twice and saw his season come to an end.
Miner (41-4) opened his day with a pin over Dillon Cox (27-10) of Atlantic in 55 seconds. Miner's quarterfinal opponent won't be so easy as he faces third-ranked Charlie Jones (46-0) of Columbus Catholic.

Skopec (46-2) needed 1:33 to pin Tyler Nance (38-13) of Chariton. Skopec will take on Eric Clarke (35-6) in today's quarterfinal. Clarke defeated seventh-ranked Steven Garcia of Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 6-4, in his opening match.
Meanwhile Murray opened the tournament against fourth-ranked Zach Muller of West Delaware. Muller went to work quickly and recorded the pin in 2:44.
In the consolation round, he faced eighth-ranked Patrick Rooney (40-3) of Bondurant-Farrar. Rooney also went to work quickly with the pin coming in 1:48.
Today's 2A quarterfinals and second-round consolation matches start at 3:30 p.m. while the 2A semifinals and third-round consolation matches start at 9:35 p.m.
