DES MOINES - Estherville Lincoln Central's Oscar Ramirez still has a chance to better his sixth-place finish of a year ago, but he came up short of the finals on Friday.

Ramirez (37-2), ranked fourth at 132 pounds, will find a familiar foe in today's consolation semifinals in Spencer's Levi Gilmore (46-7). Gilmore handed Ramirez his first loss of the season in the sectional meet. Ramirez, who had defeated the Spencer wrestler twice during the regular season, avenged the loss at the district meet by pinning Gilmore.

Meanwhile teammate Blake Gjerde saw his season come to an end with two losses on Friday.

Ramirez made it into the quarterfinals by defeating a wrestler he beat early in the season, Jordan Challene of Greene County.

Challen scored the initial takedown in the first period, but Ramirez came up with a reversal to tie the score at 2-2 for the first period. Ramirez started on bottom in the second and came up with a reversal and three near-fall points before the two wrestlers again exchanged reversals. Ramirez led 9-4 entering the final period and scored a takedown while getting back points. When the dust settled, the ELC junior had a 20-6 major decision.

That set him up against Cole Erickson of Mediapolis in the semifinal. Both wrestlers entered the match with just one loss. Erickson, ranked sixth, defeated Ramirez in last year's 120-pound consolation semifinals 8-0.

Unfortunately for the ELC junior, the result was similar late Friday evening.

Erickson shut out Ramirez with a 9-0 major decision, scoring a takedown and three near-fall points in the first period.

Meanwhile Gjerde saw his junior season come to an end without a medal.

He took on Greene County's Jeremy Scheuermann (41-6). The two wrestlers had met early in the season with Scheuermann winning a 7-4 decision. This time Scheuermann went right to work with takedowns in the first and second period. He then tilted Gjerde to get the pin in 3:27. Gjerde ends the season with a 31-11 record.
