SPENCER - The Spirit Lake boys faced a tall task, literally, in taking on ninth-ranked Sheldon in a Class 2A district final game in Spencer on Tuesday.
The Orabs boasted a starting lineup that included 6-foot-7 Dallas Ennema and 6-foot-8 James Gradert, while the Indians tallest starter is 6-foot-3.
In spite of a 23-point effort from Alec Henrickson, the Indians couldn't match up with Sheldon as the Orabs won 67-47.
Ennema, a Division I college recruit, finished with a game-high 31 points scoring from both beyond the arc as well as getting a dunk on a fast break.
Sheldon jumped out to a 21-9 advantage in the first quarter. Henrickson heated up in the second quarter, hitting four 3-pointers and scoring 14 points in the period.
However, Ennema and the Orabs kept their distance and led 36-25 at the break.
Henrickson hit his fifth trey to start the third period to get Spirit Lake within eight.
But Gradert converted a 3-pointer play and Matt Dykstra hit a 3-pointer to push the lead back to double digits.
Sheldon pushed the lead to 20 points before a 3-pointer by Trevor Smith at the buzzer cut the deficit back to 17 and 54-37.Sheldon pushed the lead to 25 points in the final frame before Spirit Lake hit some late 3-pointers. The highlight for Spirit Lake was reserve senior JD Mitchell scoring the last basket of the game.
Fellow senior Paul Brown finished with 10 points while Smith had five, Zach Arneson had four and Sam Harms had three.
For the Orabs, Gradert and Dykstra each had 14.
It was the final game for seniors Brown, Arneson and Mitchell as Spirit Lake finished the season with a 16-8 record.
