Getting fit after meal time

What better time to hear a talk about fitness than after a big meal.

That's what happened for Estherville Rotarians Thursday.

Ogie Shaw, second degree black belt in karate, Vietnam veteran, professional musician, consultant and instructor for the Seattle Seahawks and executive director of Community Fitness Leaders, among many other accomplishments, offered Rotarians an inspirational talk about fitness - plus a demonstration of how everyone could get fitter. Shaw is now president of Ogie Shaw Fitness in Beaverton, Ore.

Shaw called exercise "the best medicine in America today." Unfortunately, Shaw added, lack of motivation and time keep us from exercising regularly.

Shaw said a 20-minute workout every day of the week would give far greater benefit than less frequent and longer exercise periods.

He actually discounted dieting as a primary means of losing weight.

"Dieting slows down your metabolism and makes you preoccupied with food," Shaw said, noting that heart attack rates were three to five times higher for those who "yo-yo diet", losing weight, gaining it back and losing it again.

And, while Americans spend more on healthcare than people in any other country, Shaw said people in 36 other countries live longer than those in the U.S. In fact, he said this is the first generation of Americans that will have a shorter lifespan than previous generations.

Shaw said losing inches, but not pounds, indicates that a person is losing fat.

And that's important. Shaw said that for men, every inch that waist size exceeds chest size takes two years off a man's life.

Shaw said isokinetic machines are the most efficient form of exercise that a person can do. He said he's developed a five-minute daily workout routine that exercises every muscle in the body.

Shaw outlined a weekly fitness testing program and said if a person performs an exercise pattern for five years chances are that one won't fall back into old habits.

He then demonstrated the use of an isokinetic machine to Rotarians.
