CHEROKEE - The Estherville Lincoln Central boys golf team played their second meet of 2013 in tough conditions, losing to Spencer and defeating Cherokee on Monday.
"To say the conditions were challenging would be an understatement!" said ELC coach Dave Van Roekel. "Cold, windy, and tough conditions. I was really pleased with how some of our guys grinded out their rounds. We really have a battle going to see who will get and keep the varsity bags."
Spencer's Matt Sather took medalist honors with a 42 to lead the Tigers to victory as they finished with a team score of 180.
ELC finished with 190 led by runner-up medalist Jack Brashear, who shot a 43. Cherokee finished with a 218.
Other ELC scores were a 46 by Corey Reeves, a 48 from Tucker Milburn and a choice of 53s from Chris Seylar and Clay Tredway. The other non-counting score was a 57 from Levi Quastad.
"All of these kids have talent, now we need to learn how to score," said Van Roekel. "Jack, Corey, and Tucker really did a nice job of playing a hole at a time, and Hunter Gifford and Hunter King shot very nice rounds in the junior varsity match. We just need to work at getting better every day."
In junior varsity play, Gifford and King both shot 47s as ELC won with a 205.
Cherokee's JV finished with a 253 and Spencer didn't have a full JV team present.
Other ELC scores were a 54 by Jake Bortvit and a 57 from Alex Molacek.
Non-counting scores were a 59 by Chase Erickson and a 65 from Reese Vedder.
ELC is scheduled to play on the road against North Union on Thursday.
