Ridley relative contacts the Daily News

April 18, 2013
By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer , Estherville Daily News
The great-granddaughter of Robert and Esther Ridley, founders of Estherville, contacted the Daily News Thursday to tell us, yes, there are still some Ridley descendents out there. Joan Faber, 80, whose grandfather, George Ridley, was son of Robert and Esther, is now living in Cheyenne, Wyo. Faber attended what was known as Ridley School in Wyoming and still lives on Ridley Road north of Cheyenne. Just as Robert and Esther were Emmet County pioneers, so was George in Cheyenne in the late 1800s, arriving on an immigrant train along with his livestock. Joan had two brothers and two sisters and two children who between them had three children of their own. So does Joan remember George? “Yes I do,” she recalls. Even though she was only two and a half or three, she still remembers him. “I never heard a good thing about him,” she recalls. “He was grouchy. My grandmother (Elizabeth, or Mattie) Ridley was an absolute saint.” Joan said her nephew, Robert Pennington of Kansas City, Mo., told her about a 2009 story in the Daily News that the last Ridley had passed on. Well, maybe not. “I am the last one of the five of us,” she said of her and her siblings. Joan said her sister lived in Centerville for 50 years.
