Larry Joe Schmeling, 62, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Fremont, Calif. Larry was born Sept. 7, 1950 in Spencer to Donald Emil Schmeling and Norma Jean (Petersen) Schmeling. He graduated from Estherville High School in 1968. He also received an AA degree while in California.
Larry served his country as a 2nd Class Petty Officer in the US Navy serving aboard the USS Gompers off the cost of South Viet Nam. He served from 1970 until honorably discharged in 1974. Following his discharge, Larry used his fascination with computers to work for various financial institutions and corporations as technical support, field support, systems analysis, systems design and program consulting. In the 1990s, Larry co-founded, and then bought out, a company that became Target Systems.
Larry had a long-time love of flying, earning his pilot's license and treating his family to excursions in a 4-seater when he returned home for visits. He also made his own beer and enjoyed fine wines. Larry had been married and divorced twice. He and his longtime special friend, Karen McCain, were together for 20 years sharing their love of wine and music, and separated 4 years ago.

Larry is survived by three brothers and one sister: Allen (Linda) Schmeling, Spirit Lake; Arnold (Barb) Schmeling, Eugene, Ore.; Robert (Pam) Schmeling, Kirkland, Wash.; and Kathryn (Carl) Kruger, Heron Lake, Minn.; four nephews and nieces: James Schmeling, Donald Schmeling, Jennifer Cantwell, Travis Krueger, Terri Kruger, Matthew Schmeling and Michelle Schmeling. Also surviving are Jeanine, Deana, and Ryan (who Larry helped raise), aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
Preceding Larry in death are his parents, Donald and Norma Jean Schmeling, paternal grandparents Arthur and Rose Schmeling, maternal grandparents, F. John and Mamie Petersen, three uncles and three aunts.
