May is National Barbecue Month, a great time to get outdoors and enjoy some real great home grilling.
What's so great about National Barbecue Month in Iowa is that we have the best meat in the country right here, and at the right price. If you don't believe it, just check out the meat counter here and compare it with what you'll see in a lot of major cities and you'll be amazed.
The benefit of home grilling, of course, is that we can have a gourmet meal for the price of fast food. It's also a great time to invite the friends and neighbors over to have a great time.
And grilling is limited only by your imagination. Traditionally, we think of burgers and hot dogs. But then there are steaks, pork tenderloin, brats, salmon, shrimp - what to grill is limitless.
Grilling is also good for Iowa's economy. If more people grill beef, pork turkey and chicken, the more meat products there are running through Iowa's economy. And that helps everyone.
So on your way home tonight, stop at your local supermarket and stock up on something for the grill tonight.
And then enjoy.
Time to watch for farm traffic
As the last fields dry out, we can expect to see a lot of farm traffic picking up pretty soon.
Everywhere you go in Iowa, it seems, corn and soybean fields abound. Those same fields will have farm implements headed toward and away from them as the magic date of May 5 approaches - that's when farmers like to have their corn planted for maximum yield.
So please, be careful on the way to and from work and school. And keep a sharp lookout for whatever might be over the next hill or around the next bend.
