Prayers for DJ Benefit is Saturday

May 2, 2013
By David Swartz - Managing Editor , Estherville Daily News

When you're 15, life often looks like a long journey.

For DJ Eades of Estherville, life took an expected twist at the end of last year.

DJ had begun feeling sluggish. He had a bad cough and terrible night-time sweats.

"He basically had no gusto and coughed all the time," said his stepdad, Bruce Ring.

DJ had seen several doctors, who all attributed the problems to asthma.

But on Dec. 7, 2012, he was taken to Sioux Falls. The staff there did every test possible and flew to Rochester, (Minn.) that same night."

The diagnosis turned out to be Hodgkins lymphoma-cancer.

DJ had about an 85 percent mass on his left lung, stomach and thyroid.

The family discovered this is a type of cancer normally found in younger men.

The good news is this is a cancer you can normally come back from.

However, the family is seeking a little help for medical and travel expenses.

A "Prayers for DJ Benefit" will take place this Saturday, May 4 at the Softtail Saloon in Superior.

The event will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight.

It will include raffles, a bakes sale, a silent auction and a live auction.

Many items have been donated from local merchants including hunting items, decoys, prints, turkey calls, goose calls, duck calls and predator calls.

A family from New York, Craig and Mindy Baker, donated a turkey box call in memory of their children, ages six and one, who died due to complications from multiple sclerosis.

Saturday's event also will include music by "noodle" following the benefit. Matching funds will be provided by Thrivent Financial.

The prognosis for Eades looks promising.

He has two chemo treatments remaining and in June will have three weeks of radiation treatment in Rochester.

For more details or to donate to the benefit, call 712-209-3279 or 712-209-2060 or email An account also has been established at Employees Credit Union in Estherville.

Eades is the son of Dan Eades and Stacie Larsen and the stepson of Bruce Ring.
