Emmet County Republican central committee members and delegates convened Thursday night to select Diann Quastad Minion as their party's candidate for the June 4 special election for county auditor.

Quastad Minion will face off with Democrat Phyllis Martens whom county Democrats chose last Saturday.

Quastad Minion made the case for the Republican party's selection at the meeting at the Estherville Public Library community room. An Estherville native, Quastad Minion's parents are Lois and the late Omer Quastad of rural Estherville. She has extensive business experience, working for the past 20 years in the food service industry. She currently manages Hardee's in Estherville.

Quastad Minion said she has also has extensive experience with computer applications and management.

"My whole life, it's been about the customer," Quastad Minion said.

She and her daughter, Ciara, live in Estherville.

The county recorder position was vacated by Democrat Sue Snyder who resigned effective April 29. Iowa code does not allow the county board of supervisors to begin finding a replacement until the previous recorder leaves office.

The Emmet County Board of Supervisors April 30 decided on a special election to fill Snyder's unexpired term which has a year and a half remaining. The board also had the option of appointing a replacement.

Candidates who wish to run independently of party endorsement must file petitions with a minimum of 75 signatures of qualified Emmet County electors by 5 p.m. Friday, May 10.
