DES MOINES - Estherville Lincoln Central's Caitlyn Clayton didn't have her best day, but she still threw well enough to earn an eighth-place medal at the Class 2A State Track and Field Meet on Thursday.

The sophomore made the shot put finals with her first throw of the day, 37 feet, 11 3/4 inches. Competitors receive three throws in the preliminaries. The top eight make the finals.

"I am proud that I placed, but I know in the years to come, I will get better and succeed," Slayton said.

ELC coach Tina Burton said she was happy to see Clayton receive a medal.

"I know she was hoping for better, but she has two more years and each year her skill will continue to improve," said Burton.

Clayton's best throw this season came at the Lakes Conference meet where she threw 41 feet, 2 1/2 inches.

This was Clayton's second trip to the state meet. As a freshman in 2012, she placed ninth with a throw of 37 feet, 8 3/4 inches.

The winning throw in Class 2A came from Dasiana Larson of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura. Her best throw was her first one as she threw 41 feet, 7 1/2 inches. The next three place winners all threw over 40 feet-Sara Pate from Clarke (40 feet, 9 1/2 inches), Katie Birchmeier from Davis County (40 feet, 5 1/4 inches) and Jennifer Davis from West Marshall (40 feet, 3 1/4 inches).
