ELC board hears Little Theatre repair request

The Estherville Lincoln Central Board of Education Monday heard a request from fine arts staff for repairs at the Little Theatre.

Steve Bradburn, choral director, said seats, curtains and rigging need to be replaced.

"Right now the seats are falling apart, the curtains are falling down," he said, adding that if the Little Theatre could be used then students wouldn't have to be bussed to Roosevelt. He estimated the cost of seat replacement at $39,000 to $45,000.

Bradburn said he had spoken with the Excel! Estherville board which had indicated interest in the project. Another possible of source might be the Emmet County Community Foundation, he said.

"The lighting and sound is pretty shot" as well, said Bradburn, quoting a figure of $250,000 for those improvements.

Bradburn said high-school music and drama performances could be held at the facility. He said Excel! had said the music department should check with the school board first and they would see what they could do. He said the Fine Arts Patrons are also interested in helping.

He said piano recitals could also be held in the Little Theatre and the cafeteria is conveniently located nearby.

One board member suggested that the district chip in with Iowa Lakes Community College's plans for a fine arts center on the north side of the main building on the Estherville campus.

"If the college is serious about doing something maybe we should partner with them and make it bigger," said board member Nancy Anderson.
