The July/August 2012 issue of Checkpoint, the national publication of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, listed 50 World War II veterans who serve VFW posts in official capacities.
Four were from Post 3388 in Estherville.

n Dean Higgins, Sr. Vice Commander.
It is indeed an honor to have so many Post 3388 members who not only served their country in World War II but who continue to serve the VFW, their community and their country.
One only has to think back to the moving memorial services for SSG Steve Blass a couple months ago to understand the importance of our local veteran service organizations such as the VFW and American Legion.
When a soldier is laid to rest, whether he or she died in wartime of peacetime, it's the graveside rites by these dedicated veterans in service organizations that are the pride that heals the pain of the families of the departed.
On Monday, Emmet County residents will have the opportunity to attend Memorial Day services that will honor the fallen. We urge you to attend these services that are announced in today's newspaper.
America continues to be at war. Lest the dedication and commitment of soldiers past, present and future be forgotten, the least we can do is honor the soldiers of the past.
It is honoring our soldiers that makes us truly a great nation. We cannot forget them.
