James B. Matre

James B. Matre, 85, former postmaster of Estherville, Iowa passed away on May 22, 2013 in Englewood, Colo. Jim was born in Estherville in 1927. He served in the Merchant Marines and traveled the world for two years after graduating from Estherville High School in 1945. In 1948 he married the former Joyce Nelson, celebrating 50 years of marriage in 1998. Jim joined the US Postal Service as a letter carrier in 1957 and advanced to the position of Postmaster in 1972. He served as Postmaster in Estherville until his retirement in 1987.

After retirement, Jim and Joyce moved to Fairfield Bay, Ark., where they built a home and enjoyed many happy hours on the golf course. He participated in Rotary, Sons of Norway, and Shrine activities. He was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Edgemont, Ark. Jim's father, Oscar, had been born in Indre Matre, Norway and Jim was able to make a number of visits to Norway to meet his Norwegian relatives and to visit the birthplace of his father. In his later years he surrounded himself with pictures and memories of these trips and enjoyed keeping in contact with his Norwegian relatives. After Joyce's death in 1998, Jim loved visiting his son and family in the mountains of Colorado and in 2009 he moved to Colorado to be closer to his family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar J. Matre; mother, Belle (Heggen) Matre; two brothers, Abner Matre and Selmer Matre; and wife, Joyce Matre. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Kathy Matre of Buena Vista, Colo.; sister, Mary Ann Pomerenke of Lakefield, Minn.; granddaughters, Kristy (Brett) McDaniel of Jonesboro, Ark., and Kerry Matre of Lyons, Colo.; and four great-grandchildren, Rory McDaniel, Elin McDaniel, Sierra Lauren and Oz Lauren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 10 at Olmstead Woodland Memorial Park, 11955 Edgemont Rd., Edgemont, Arkansas 72044. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) or a charity of your choice.
