Indians hold off E’Hawks

SPIRIT LAKE - Spirit Lake took a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning against Emmetsburg and then hung on to win 3-2 over the E'Hawks on Wednesday.

The Indians scored a run in the second inning and got the second when freshman Mackenzie Thate hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Spirit Lake then scored an all-important insurance run in the sixth inning.

After the E'Hawks pushed to runs across, the visitors had the tying and go-ahead runs on second and third base.

But the Indians got the last out to preserve the victory.

Bailee Newman pitched all seven innings giving up two unearned runs on three hits with five strikeouts and eight walks. Spirit Lake finished with seven hits. Alissa Christoffer was 2-3 and Kayla Herrig went 2-2 with two RBIs. Carter Hassel and Thate both went 1-2 and Newman was 1-3. Spirit Lake (3-2 overall, 1-0 in the Lakes Conference) was at Cherokee on Thursday. The Indians host Spencer on Monday.

GTRA's defense struggles

RUTHVEN - The Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire continued to struggle defensively in a 13-0, five-inning loss to Trinity Christian on Wednesday.

Only five of Trinity's 13 runs were earned.

Alyssa Hoffman took the loss as she gave up eight hits, struck out three batters and walked eight.

The Titans managed just three hits. Daisy Jordan was 2-3 and Grace Skattebo was 1-2 with a double.

GTRA (0-5 overall) was scheduled to play at Harris-Lake Park on Thursday. The Titans are on the road against Clay Central-Everly today.

Spirit Lake rallies to victory

SPIRIT LAKE - After spotting Emmetsburg five runs, the Spirit Lake offense woke up Wednesday. The Indians plated three runs in the fourth and sixth in the fifth to come away with a 9-5 victory.

Brandon Stoll pitched all six innings giving up five runs (one earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts and five walks. Spirit Lake finished with nine hits with Nic Amudson going 2-4 with three RBIs, Nick Wetzler went 2-4 with two RBIs and Nile Skogerboe was 2-3 with two RBIs. Also, Paul Brown was 1-2 with an RBI, Cole Thate was 1-3 with an RBI and Brandon Stoll was 1-4. Spirit Lake (4-0 overall, 1-0 in the Lakes Conference) is at Cherokee tonight.
