ARMSTRONG - The Armstrong Betterment Club is planning for the community's annual Fourth of July parade Thursday, July 4.

The parade will start at the west gate of the football field and continue west on Fourth Avenue to Sixth Street (Main Street) and south to Sixth Street (Armstrong Mercantile) and east to Columbian Boulevard. The route then turns north, taking Columbian Boulevard out to Highway 15.

The kiddy parade will start on the southeast side of the school, going to the Armstrong Corner Mercantile and turning east. Participants may stop there if they choose, or follow the entire route.

The staging area will be at the high school football field parking area. Participants should come through the north gate off Highway 15. A parade official will be in the area to assist everyone. The staging area for horses is off Highway 15 on the Emmet County shed property on Columbian Boulevard. Emmet County does ask that any litter or manure be picked up. Horses and rigs do not have to be in place until 12:30-12:45 unless participants want then judged. Horses will be at the end of the parade.

Big equipment will line up on the north block of Columbian Boulevard right off Highway 15. Fire trucks will line up on the second block of Columbian facing north. Any overflow will line up on North Ninth Street.

Organizations are invited to have a parade entry. Floats, color guards, horses, old autos and all units are welcome. Prizes of $150, $100 and $50 will be awarded for first, second and third places respectively in Family, Commercial and Organizational categories. Art's-Way Mfg. and GKN Armstrong Wheels, Inc. will pick a favorite entry to win their cash award before the parade starts. Kiddy parade prizes are $25, $20 and $15 for first, second and third respectively.

The parade starts exactly at 1 p.m. and participants should arrive at the staging area no later than noon. Pre-registration is not required, but it does help in organizing the lineup. Special awards are chosen at 12:15 before the parade starts.

Entry forms are requested by June 28 and may be requested from and returned to: Vickie Rooney, P.O. Box 407, Armstrong, IA 50514 or email: vbrooney@ringtelco.com or requested by phone at (712) 868-4020 or (712) 868-3681.

Other activities include park activities, food stands, track and field events at the football field, pedal tractor pull, Kracker box races and three-on-three basketball. New events include inflatables for all ages and an Emmet County Cattlemen's supper Friday night with a dance and drawing for a motorcycle.

Anyone with questions may call Vickie Rooney at (712) 868-4020 or (712) 868-3681.
