ARMSTRONG - Funeral services for Berniece Marian Barnard (nee Braland), 91, of Tallahassee, Fla. and formerly of Armstrong, will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong with Pastor Lauri Boysen officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong. Interment will be a Armstrong Grove Cemetery in Armstrong.

She died Tuesday, May 29, 2013, in Tallahassee, Fla.

Born and raised in Armstrong, she was the youngest of three daughters of Jonas and Emma Vigdal Braland. She graduated from Armstrong High School and moved to Cedar Falls where she attended the University of Northern Iowa. She played the clarinet in the UNI band while earning her teaching certificate. She pursued a career in teaching, her second love, and went on to become one of the prettiest second-grade teachers in central Iowa. She met her future husband, John, during a return visit to UNI, and, after her marriage, lived in various places throughout the world as a "military wife," and eventually settled in Davenport for a number of years. She was the full-time mother of one son and two daughters and remained married to John, the love of her life, until his death in 2010. She and John retired to Orlando, Fla. in 1982, and they became actively involved with a gourmet cooking group and continued to travel the world. She fondly remembered her Iowa roots and frequently returned to the area to vacation at Lake Okoboji and fish for bullheads at Tuttle Lake. She was also the proud grandmother of three grandsons, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.
