SPENCER - Estherville Lincoln Central didn't have a good start at the Spencer Tournament on Friday.
The Midgets lost 9-5 to Class 1A No. 2 Akron-Westfield and then lost 10-1 to Sioux Center.
Carson Gjerde took the loss in the first game giving up 15 hits with no strikeouts and two walks.
At the plate, Rachel Bates was 2-3; Emily Kirchner went 1-2 with a triple and an RBI, Gjerde was 1-4 and Liz Brashear and Kristen King each had an RBI.
In the second game, ELC struggled early against Sioux Center falling behind 10-0 after three innings.
Offensively, the Midgets couldn't get the bats going, managing just three hits in the contest.
ELC recorded its lone run with two outs in the third inning when Gjerde reached on an error, stole second and scored on a single by Kirchner. Brashear singled as Kirchner beat the throw to third base. But Sioux Center recorded the final out.
ELC didn't have a base runner the final three innings.
The defensive highlight came in the top of the fifth. Sioux Center got a base runner on with a one-out single. Kirchner then snagged a hot line drive at shortstop and doubled up the runner at first base.
Brashear took the loss as she gave up 12 hits, struck out two and walked two.
ELC (11-8 overall) continues play at the Spencer Tournament today. The Midgets take on Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn at 11 a.m. and then get a rematch with North Union at 2:30 p.m. North Union won 6-1 over ELC at the Midgets Tournament earlier this season.
