ROCK RAPIDS - Matt Burrell pitched a one-hit shut out and Derek Nieland had the hot bat as Estherville Lincoln Central defeated Central Lyon 10-0 on Thursday.

Nieland was a single short of the cycle as he hit a two-RBI triple in the first inning, a two-run home run in the second inning and a double in the sixth inning. He drew a walk in the seventh and finished 3-4 with four RBIs.

Meanwhile Burrell struck out eight batters and walked five with his defense only committing one error on the night.

"We hopped on them early with five runs in the first so it was nice giving Matt a lead and letting him settle in right away," said ELC coach Lee Evans. "Matt managed the game well."

ELC totaled 11 hits on the night. Besides Nieland's three hits, Adam Reiter was 2-3 with an RBI, two stolen bases and two sacrifices; Tucker Milburn was 2-3; Justin Frederick was 1-3; Corey Reeves was 1-4 with two RBIs and Tyler Swanson and Billy Snyder each went 1-4.

ELC (9-11 overall) is home this evening against Emmetsburg.

The ELC Junior Varsity earned a 10-1 win over Central Lyon.

Tim Greving earned the win as he pitched four innings and gave up three hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

At the plate, Greving was 2-2 with an RBI; Cole Budach was 1-1 while Alec Wycoff and Carsten Bosch each went 1-2. Also Austin Egeland was 1-3 with three RBIs and Blake Gjerde and Jake Bortvit also were 1-3.
