BANCROFT - North Union took a while to score, but the Warriors finally scratched out four runs in the fifth inning and went on to win 5-2 over Forest City on Monday.
Sawyer Doocy pitched a complete game as he gave up two earned runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks.
Doocy had three strikeouts in both the first and sixth innings with Forest City's first hit a one-out triple in the first inning.
Forest city put together three two-out hits in the top of the fourth inning to score their two runs, but couldn't get a runner past second base the final three innings.
Offensively, North Union's fifth inning started with a leadoff walk by designated hitter Brandon Kollasch. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Corey Vaske. Jake Adams then reached safely on a fielder's choice and Cody Runksmeier drew a walk to load the bases. Collin Runksmeier then reached on a fielder's choice as Kollasch scored. Doocy then hit a ball at the shortstop and an error allowed North Union to tie the game. Spencer Ricke was hit by a pitch and a single by Garrett Johnson brought in two runs for a 4-2 lead.
North Union added a run in the sixth as Kollasch led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Vaske and scored when Adams reached on an error by the Indians' center fielder.
North Union finished with five hits, as Johnson was 2-3 with two RBI. Adams was 1-2 with an RBI; Ricke was 1-2 and Cody Runksmeier was 1-3.
North Union (22-8 overall) hosted West Fork in a doubleheader on Tuesday. The Warriors will play the winner of Estherville Lincoln Central and Sioux Central at 5 p.m. next Tuesday at Spirit Lake in the second round of the Class 2A District Tournament.
