DES MOINES - Spirit Lake's season came to an end Monday, but what a place to end the season.
The Indians qualified for their first trip to the state tournament with victories over Emmetsburg, North Union and Western Christian.
On Monday, Class 2A No. 4 Kuemper Catholic of Carroll ended that run with a 5-1 victory at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Kuemper earned all five of its runs. They started quickly with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Meanwhile Spirit Lake, which had been hitting the ball well in postseason, was held to one run on six hits and left five on base.
The Indians loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning with no outs, but only pushed the one run across the plate. Leadoff hitter Paul Brown started with a single. Brandon Stoll and Nick Amundson also singled, but only Brown scored on a 6-4 fielder's choice off the bat of cleanup hitter Reese Salmon.
Stoll, who had earned the victory in each of Spirit Lake's wins, pitched six innings and struck out two while walking four batters and giving up 10 hits.
For the Knights, Chris Halber struck out 10 batters and walked none.
Brown led Spirit Lake and went 2-3.
Stoll, Amundson, Tony Eckart and Cole Thate each went 1-3.
Defensively, Spirit Lake didn't commit an error while the Knights had one. Kuemper also left eight runners on base.
The Indians (16-11) say farewell to six seniors-Paul Brown, Brandon Stoll, Reese Salmon, Nic Amundson, Andrew Ites and Nick Wetzler. Both Brown and Stoll had over 100 hits for their varsity career.
Kuemper is making its seventh appearance at the state tournament and has a record of 8-6 in the big show.
In other 2A games, Beckman Catholic defeated Columbus Catholic 3-2 and Roland-Story defeated Mount Vernon 2-1.
The late game Monday featured North Pock vs. Albia.
