WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) Thursday announced that Estherville Municipal Airport will receive $696,477 from the U.S. Department of Transportation?s Federal Aviation Administration.
The funds will be used to rehabilitate the airport's tarmac.
Estherville Airport Commissioner Maurice Show said the airport commission has been working towards this project the past two to three years.
"The old apron has been there for many years," Show said.
With the federal funds and a 10 percent match from the City of Estherville, Show said they hope to complete the project before the 'snow flies."
The project entails completing taking out the current apron north of the airport tournament, putting in drainage tile and a whole new ramp area. It also includes additional tie-downs for airplanes that stay overnight.
The fuel station will be moved for the duration of the project.
"It's nice to get the funeral funding to help with this project," Show said. "It will improve the look at the airport.
Harkin is a senior member of the Appropriations subcommittee that funds these initiatives.
