Thumbs up to anyone who helped with putting on the Wallingford Centennial. From family-friendly kids' events to the street dance and everything in between, the community just six miles south of Estherville put on a fine extravaganza to celebrate its 100th birthday. Congratulations to the community.
Thumbs up to the new teachers at Estherville Lincoln Central. We appreciate your time and abilities to educate our children. Best wishes in your first year at ELC.
Thumbs up to all the organizations that help disadvantaged youth have school supplies for the start of the school year. There are three groups pictured in today's paper and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Thumbs up to the Clay County Fair, Iowa Lakes Community College and the STEM program for their upcoming attempt at setting a Guinness World Record. Trying to get 1,500 people to take part in the Largest Practical Science Lesson at the 2013 Clay County Fair will be an effort worth watching-or even participating in. How often does the average person have a chance to set a Guinness Record?
Thumbs up to the Estherville Parks and Recreation Board and Estherville City Administrator Penny Clayton as they work to improve Trinity Park. The board is seeking bids for new equipment and plans to sandblast and paint the older, but still stable play items. Those items which aren't safe will be removed.
Thumbs up to Friends of Fort Defiance for sponsoring the Prairie Ecology Bus Center, which will be at the park from 1-4 p.m. Sunday. We encourage any who can to take advantage of this learning opportunity. Come on students, it may give you a leg up on your biology class this fall.
A green thumbs up to Carol and Bob Jensen for receiving Yard of the Month honors. In this dry weather, it takes a lot of work to keep a yard looking its best.
Thumbs down to anybody who didn't participate in a community summer activity in 2013.
