CLARION - Clarion-Goldfield jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter against Estherville Lincoln Central. While the Midgets never quit, the Cowboys were just too much in the 51-25 victory.

Clarion-Goldfield did most of the damage on the ground with an unofficial 344 yards rushing.

"We didn't do a good job at making our reads and trusting our reads (on defense)," said ELC coach Andy Umthun.

Clarion-Goldfield went to work right away, capping their first drive with a 1-yard run by Mitch Gambrill.

The Cowboys got the ball back again and this time a 64-yard run by Zach Pogge came with 7:13 still left in the opening frame.

Later in the period, quarterback Trenton Sann completed his only pass of the first half, a 21-yard strike to Joel Haberman. The Cowboys completed the two-point conversion on each score.

ELC went to the air in the second quarter. A pass from Justin Heinrichs to Joe Heinrichs got the Midgets inside the Cowboy 30-yard line. On second and 7 from the 20-yard line, Justin connected with Rod Fuller, who took the ball to the 1-yard line.

On the next play, Billy Snyder busted into the end zone with 8:42 left in the first half. Sergio Orsornio's point-after kick made the score 24-7.

Clarion-Goldfield followed up with one more scoring drive. This time Haberman broke free on a 24-yard counter with 4:17 left in the half. This time the two-point conversion failed.

ELC did little on its next drive, but the Midgets pinned the Cowboys near their goal line. ELC used timeouts and got the ball back with about a minute left in the half with good field position.

Fortune smiled on ELC one play when the Cowboys were called for roughing the passer. But a couple plays later ELC was backed up with an intentional grounding call. That didn't hurt them though as Justin connected with Joe on a 26-yard pass to the end zone with 15 seconds left in the half. The PAT kick trailed and ELC trailed 30-13 at the break.

Clarion-Goldfield struck first in the second half and added a two-point conversion to go up 38-13. ELC then fumbled the kickoff. A few plays later, Sann connected with Haberman on a 6-yard strike and the hosts led 45-13.

ELC put together drive converting a fourth down with a pass to Billy Snyder. Justin Heinrichs then burst free on a 27-yard run. Then the ELC quarterback connected with Joe Heinrichs, this time from 12 yards out, with 11:15 left to go in the contest.

The two-point conversion failed as ELC trailed 45-19.

Clarion-Goldfield came back with another drive with Sann scoring on a 21-yard run with 6:19 left in the game. Osornio blocked the extra point attempt.

ELC came back with one more score with Justin Heinrichs connecting with Rod Fuller from 7 yards out with 2:22 remaining. The two-point conversion failed again.

Unofficially, Justin Heinrichs was 17-of-32 passing for 267 yards. Joe Heinrichs caught eight of those for 139 yards. Fuller, Snyder and Carsten Bosch each caught passes as well.

On the ground, Justin Heinrichs ran the ball 13 times for 73 yards and Billy Snyder had 33 yards on 13 carries.

Pogge had 181 yards on 18 carries for the Cowboys. Clarion-Goldfield was 3-of-5 passing for 29 yards with two touchdowns.

ELC (2-2 overall, 1-1 in district play) hosts South Central Calhoun for homecoming next week.
