Area basketball fans got a preview of six boys' basketball teams at a Jamboree in Estherville Friday evening.

Team pairings were North Iowa vs. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire vs. Sibley-Ocheyedan and Estherville Lincoln Central vs. Bishop Garrigan. Each set played two quarters of exhibition basketball.

ELC 31

ELC took on Bishop Garrigan in the nightcap.

The Midgets were unable to overcome a slow start in the first quarter, falling behind by 19 points, 26-7 and then losing 41-31 after a much better second quarter.

Bishop Garrigan came out firing, scoring the first nine points of the game before Carsten Bosch scored a pair of layups. ELC still trailed by nine after a basket by Justin Heinrichs, 15-6, but the visitors ended the opening frame on an 11-2 run.

ELC came out more aggressive in the second quarter.

A 3-pointer by David Hughes and a steal and layup got ELC within 13 and 29-16. But ELC couldn't cut much more into the lead until two free throws by Heinrichs and one by Bryce Mann cut the deficit to 39-29 with 38.5 seconds left in the contest.

Heinrichs finished with 15 points while Bosch and Hughes each had seven and Mann and Joe Heinrichs each had one.

ELC finished 12-of-18 from the free throw line while Bishop Garrigan was 10-of-14.

Nathan Krieps led Garrigan with 13 points and Chris Loss had 10.

ELC opens the regular season on the road against Harris-Lake Park on Tuesday.

Sibley-Ocheyedan 35, GTRA 34

In the closes contest of the night, GTRA fell behind 10-4 before rallying with 10 straight points in the first quarter-four each by Noah Stukey and Connor Sturgill and one basket by Mason McGrauth. Andy Geelan scored the final five points for the Titans in the first period including a 3-pointer before the end of the period as GTRA led 19-15.

Two 3-pointers and a three-point play by the Generals gave them a 24-21 lead, which they never relinquished. The titans fell behind by eight points, 34-26 with just over 2 minutes remaining.

But they needed a 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds and were just able to get an offensive putback with less than 5 seconds remaining. Garrigan never in-bounded the ball as time ran out.

Stukey led GTRA with 11 points while Sturgill had 12, Geelan had nine and McGrauth had two.

GTRA opens the regular season on the road against West Bend-Mallard on Tuesday.

H-M-S 27, North Iowa 20

North Iowa surged to an early 8-4 lead, but then trailed 12-10 after one quarter. The Hawks pulled away late in the second period. Blake Simons led HMS with 11 points while Tate Corporon has seven points and Derek Yegge had six for the Bison.
