Tritons eke out win over Lakers

Thirteenth-ranked Iowa Lakes had its chance to defeat Iowa Central in wrestling action in Estherville.

The Lakers had chances in the early matches to take a commanding lead against the Tritons. The hosts led 19-12 after a pin by Brandon Sorenson over Jacob Meehan at 174 pounds.

Iowa Central battled back with a decision at 184 pounds and took a 20-19 lead with a technical fall at 194 pounds.

With just the heavyweights remaining, Iowa Lakes Davian Franklin prepared to face off against 10-ranked Malcolm Allen.

After sparring for about a minute, a sudden flurry of action took place on the edge of the Lakers' side of the match.

The scuffle resulted in a double disqualification as the ref said both wrestlers were at fault.

With no team points, Iowa Central and its coach, former Estherville Lincoln Central standout Luke Moffitt, left town with a one-point victory.

"We talked about getting off to fast starts in our matches and we did that last night in most matches, said Iowa Lakes coach Cody Alesch. "However what cost us last night was finishing those matches. I thought the guys wrestled with great intensity through the night, but we just did not finish matches like we need to against a quality team like Iowa Central."

The Lakers led each of the first four matches, but only received two wins.

At 125 pounds, Juan Torres jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the first period, but trailed 8-7 heading into the final frame after Nate Smith recorded two takedowns in the second period. Smith held on for a 9-7 win.

At 144 pounds, Cody Cline caught Iowa Central's Caleb Studebaker in a throw and scored five quick points. But when Cline couldn't hang on for the pin, Studebaker fought back with four points of his own in the second period and then pulled out a 9-7 with a takedown and reversal in the final frame.

Iowa Lakes return to action Saturday at the Simpson Invite in Indianola.
