Thursday night, the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce recognized two men who have probably done as much as anyone to help our community.
Dave Seylar, owner of Dave's Brownhouse Kitchens, and Steve Danielson, owner of Steve's Sales & Service, were recognized respectively as Business of the Year and Citizen of the Year at the Chamber annual banquet at the Elks Lodge.
Dave has worked diligently to provide quality housing for Estherville residents, building over 30 condo units in the community. These units are designed for minimum maintenance, making them ideal for people of retirement age who want to move into more convenient housing. This has done a lot to increase the valuation of Estherville's housing base and to keep people here.
Dave has also volunteered in many, many capacities in Estherville. As a founding member of the Friends of Fort Defiance, he has been at every work session and meeting, helping the Friends keep the park up despite dwindling funds. He has also served devotedly on the Estherville City Council.
If it has anything to do with community events or entertainment, Steve Danielson is there. Whether it's Gospel on the Square, Tuba Christmas, Sweet Corn Days or serving as chair of the Excel Estherville Arts and Culture Committee, Steve is at the epicenter. He is in fact the person who makes all these things happen.
Steve also provides a valuable community service in his store. In how many communities of our size would you find enough musical equipment to outfit a high-school band, orchestra or rock band. Well, Steve has it all.
It was only a matter of time until one of these people would be so recognized. Indeed, Danielson could easily have been named Business of the Year and Seylar as Citizen of the Year.
The point is that both are the type of people who make Estherville what it is - a community of dedicated and caring persons who have made us a small city with a huge heart.
