ROCHESTER, Minn. - The Iowa Lakes wrestling team went 3-1 at the regional duals last Saturday.

Freddie Rodriguez and Brandon Sorenson highlighted the day with 4-0 records. This was the team's first competition back from Christmas break.

The Lakers lost to Rochester 31-15, but defeated Ridgewater 34-15, Itasca 42-10 and Augsburg JV 33-12.

"We were sluggish as a team especially in our first three duals," said Iowa Lakes coach Cody Alesch. "Guys struggled fighting for 7 minutes, some of that could have been getting down to weight for the first time in several weeks but that is only an excuse. We needed guys to step up in some duals and that did not happen.

"With a month left you need to fight through that adversity and wrestle tougher when things are tough and today we did not do that as a team.

"I thought Freddie Rodriguez looked good as he has gotten down to 125 and seems to be hitting his stride," the coach said. "Freddie has put in the work to get back to form after being out of wrestling for awhile. These past few months of hard work is really showing.

Brandon Sorenson at 174 had a great day going 4-0 and taking down fifth-ranked and returning All-American Garret Miller from Rochester," Alesch said. "Brandon has put in a lot of extra work this season and has continued to grow each week as a college wrestler."

Iowa Lakes beats

No. 5 Ellsworth

Iowa Lakes defeated fifth-ranked Ellsworth on the Lakers' home mat on Wednesday winning 24-18.

"All week the focus has been fighting harder on the little things in practice," said Iowa Lakes coach Cody Alesch. "We don't get better at fighting in practice we don't get better in competition and the guys have stepped up in practice this past week and tonight it showed. As a team we fought in every match and the outcome was a good dual win against a very good team."

Each team won five matches, but the Lakers got the bonus team points with pins by Brandon Soreson (174) and Davion Franklin (285).

After traveling to the Grand View Open today, the Lakers host NIACC this Wednesday.
