Conference Wrestling: ELC sends six wrestlers to Lakes finals

Ramirez, J. Bortvit, Bonner place first

SPENCER - Estherville Lincoln Central sent six wrestlers to the Lakes Conference Tournament finals and came away with three conference champions at the meet in Spencer on Friday.

Oscar Ramirez (132), Jake Bortvit (182) and Chase Bonner (220) all came away with first place finishes while Juan Castro (113), Blake Gjerde (152), Billy Snyder (170) finished second.

The Midgets were running in second place behind Spencer in the team standings late in the tournament. Full results were not available at press time.

For Ramirez, the senior began by pinning, LeMars' Quenton Bodle in 43 seconds. He then pinned Emmetsburg's Jas Jamison in 3:19. In the finals, he faced Cherokee's Hunter Morrow. Ramirez had to wrestle the full six minutes, but came up with a 7-4 decision.

Bortvit's road was a little tougher. He started by pinning Spirit Lake's Trevor Bueltel in 3:25 and then won a 6-4 decision over Western Christian's Mitch Post. In the finals, he caught Cherokee's Mason Meitzenheimer and won with a pin in 1:18.

Bonner pinned his way through the 220-pound bracket. He beat LeMars' Jorge Perea-Ahumada in 40 seconds, Cherokee's Charlie Wych in 17 seconds and Storm Lake's Jesse Wolver in 1:18 in the final.

Castro had first-round bye and the pinned Cherokee's Matthew Stines in 2:36. In the finals, Castro faced Spencer's Cody Hueckfelt and came up short by a point, 10-9.

Gjerde started his night with a pin over Cherokee's Isaac LaFluer in 1:24 and then beat Spencer's Andrew White 8-4 to reach the finals. There he faced Spirit Lake's Kenten Murray where he lost by decision.

Snyder had a first-round bye and then won a 10-3 decision over Western Christian's Zach De Jager to reach the finals. There, he faced Storm Lake's Noel Buenelos and lost a 9-5 decision to finish second.

ELC had three third place finishes.

At 138 pounds, Thomas Bortvit opened with a pin over LeMars' Mason Weiler in 4:14, but he then lost 4-3 to Storm Lake's Juan Rios.

He came back in the consolation bracket to pin Cherokee's Justin Harding in 1:51 and then won 9-5 over Emmetsburg's Chris VanHuevelen in the third-place match.

At 145 pounds, Cole Budach first pinned Storm Lake's Cesar Loera in 2:43, but then he lost by fall to Spirit Lake's Zack Skopec.

In the consolation bracket, he won 5-2 over Emmetsburg's Caige Elbert and he then defeated Cherokee's Christian Lundy 12-1.

At 195 pounds, Austin Egeland had a bye, but then lost by fall to Spirit Lake's Jacob Jenness. In the consolation bracket, Egeland pinned Cherokee's Dante Brown in 3:56 and then pinned Western Christian's Skylar Bonestroo in 30 seconds to place third.

Easton Gifford finished fourth for ELC at 120 pounds while Clay Budach (126) placed sixth.
