DES MOINES - Spirit Lake Park's Zach Skopec didn't have an easy first-round match, but the undefeated and second-ranked 145-pounder advanced to the 2A state quarterfinal.

Meanwhile, senior teammate David Trucksess didn't fare as well as he lost two matches to end his career.

Skopec opened the day against Kuemper Catholic's Jared Eischeid. The two were tied 2-2 to start the final period, with Skopec winning the final 2 minutes, 4-1, for the 6-3 victory.

Skopec (46-0) will wrestle Algona junior Austin Long (31-12) in today's quarterfinal.

Wrestling at 160 pounds, Trucksess started the day against Webster City's Alex Oswald. Oswald (35-5), ranked eighth, gave up just an escape to Trucksess in the 6-1 victory.

In the consolation bracket, Trucksess ran into Central Decatur's Colton Ranney (44-14). Trucksess started well, building a 12-1 lead before Ranney came up with a reversal. Then Ranney caught Trucksess in a bad position and came up with a pin in 3:11.

Trucksess ends his final season with a 28-11 record.
