DES MOINES - Cody Thompson didn't have an easy start to the day, but the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire junior ended the first session of the Class 1A state wrestling tournament in dramatic fashion.
The junior heavyweight needed just 8 seconds to defeat C-M-B, Baxter's Dawson Dahlke in the consolation round to keep his hopes alive. Dahlke finished his tournament with a 19-15 record. Thompson (42-4) awaits his chance to move into the medal round on Friday.
Thompson, ranked eighth, started the tournament against sixth-ranked Tyler Yonkovic of Maquoketa Valley. Yokovic, undefeated in 49 matches this season, scored the first points of the match with an escape in the second period. Thompson tied the match at 1-1 with an escape in the third period. Although both had been warned for stalling, Thompson was tagged with a stall call first as Yonkovic took a 2-1 lead. Forced to pick up the offense, Thompson ended up getting taken down as Yonkovic advanced with the 4-1 win.
Thompson's first match on Friday will be against the loser of Luke Kuennen of Turkey Valley and Tim Butcher of Manson-Northwest Webster.
