SPENCER - Algona did what it could to slow down Spirit Lake junior Alec Henrickson. But sophomore guard Billy Brown picked up the slack in helping the Indians defeat the Bulldogs 70-47 in a Class 3A first-round game on Monday.
Brown finished the game with 28 points while shooting 9-of-17 from the field, which included 6-of-10 from 3-point range.
While Henrickson, who averages nearly 24 points a game, had just eight, junior Trevor Smith also made key contributions, scoring 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.
But it was Spirit Lake's defense that kept Algona (14-8) from getting on track.
The Indians started quickly in the first quarter, but the Indians led just 16-12 after two free throws by Caleb Jennings. But a 3-pointer by Smith started a 7-1 run to end the first quarter with the Indians leading 23-13.
The pace scored down in the second quarter as both teams struggled to hit shots. Algona continually passed around Spirit Lake's zone, but only got a couple 3-pointers by Justin Raymond. Brown answered each of those treys in a quarter that Spirit Lake won 8-6 to lead 31-19 at the break.
But the Indians heated up again in the third quarter and the Bulldogs just couldn't keep the pace.
Brown hit two 3-pointers to start the second half as part of a 13-2 run which concluded with a three-point play by Alex Pringnitz as the Indians led 44-24. The Indians led 53-29 to start the final frame.
Pringnitz and Harms each finished with five points while Jennings and Tyler Alger each had four. Spirit Lake also finished 14-of-16 from the free-throw line.
The Indians (16-6) finished with 16 assists led by Smith with four and Brown, Pringnitz and Henrickson each with three.
