Don attended Emmet County Country Schools. Following his service in the United States Navy during World War II, Don married Nonda Cother on Sept. 14, 1946, in Spencer. Other than spending four years in California in the early '50s, they made their home in the Estherville area.

Early in their marriage, Don farmed and later worked for Golden Sun Feeds in the feed mill for 28 years. Don's family provided pony rides for the annual July 4th Golden Sun company picnic. After a work-related injury forced him into early retirement, Don was known by many as "Trader", always looking to buy horses, tack, lawn mowers or whatever he could make a buck on. Don and Nonda later operated the Beaver's Rec pool hall in Estherville for eight years. He worked for his son, Randy, always picking up and washing the golf balls at the driving range. Greater than Don's love of horses was his love for his family. He was constantly looking to tease anyone, especially his grandkids and great-grandkids.

The last few years Don and Nonda would go for a daily ride in the car, always stopping at Hardee's for a large Coke before they left town. Don entered Rosewood Manor in October 2013 and continued his teasing whenever the opportunity arose. The aides referred to him as "Ornery". Even after entering Rosewood he was able to get out a few times for a ride.

Don was a member of the First Christian Church of Estherville, the American Legion, longtime member of Estherville Saddle Club serving many years as president and a life member of the VFW.

Left to cherish Don's memory are his wife, Nonda; son, Ron (Cathy) Beaver; daughter, Lori (Mark) King and daughter-in-law Norma Beaver all of Estherville; grandchildren, Matt (Jessica) Beaver, Aaron (Sheri) Beaver, Ann (Shawn) Ingvall, Jared (Jodi) Beaver, Nicole (Matt) Lauritsen and Sara (Toby) Rezac; 11 great grandchildren; and siblings, George (Gloria) Beaver of Amery, Wis., Nancy Jevyak of Norwalk, Calif., Dale (Carrie) Beaver of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Helen Myers of Emmetsburg. Preceding Don in death were his parents; his son, Randy Beaver; and siblings, Robert Beaver, Leonard Beaver and Mary Ellen Shackelford.
