ESTHERVILLE - Funeral services for Lillian Howard, 88, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville with Pastor Chad Ensz and Pastor Kennen Barber Ensz officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery in Estherville.
She died on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.
Lillian Eleanor Weir, the eldest child of John R. and Florence (Stevens) Weir, was born on Aug. 9, 1925, at Malden, Mass.
She received her education in Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School in 1943. Following graduation she went to work for Western Union, serving in Sioux City, Chicago and Boston.
On March 3, 1945, Lillian was united in marriage to Bill Howard at Beaufort, S.C., where Bill was stationed in the US Marine Corps. In March 1946, they came back to Emmet County and began farming in Swan Lake Township where they raised their family. In February 1975 they moved into Estherville. For over 20 years they spent winter months at Mesa, Ariz.
Lillian was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Gruver until it closed, then transferred her membership back to the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville. At Gruver, she was active in the women's groups.
She was a leader of the Swan Lake Better Luck 4-H Club for 25 years. She made many of her children's clothes as they grew up, and taught many young ladies to sew.
She made quilts for many years, giving them as gifts to family members, selling others at craft shows. Other hobbies she enjoyed over the years were ceramics, silver work, painting, reading and playing cards.
Left to cherish her memory are her six children: Mary (Michael) Fox, Woodward, Okla.; Jeanne (David) Egeland; Lois (Walt) Jensen, Estherville; Glenn (Bonnie) Howard, Dolliver; Diana (Skip) Clabaugh; and John Howard, Estherville; 22 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, one sister Mary Mountain, Mitchell, S.D., brother-law Donald Howard and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill in 2009, her sister Beverly (Weir) Elliott and two infant great-grandsons, Jacob Egeland, Zachary Egeland and Carson Bennett. Online condolences may be sent to www.henryolsonfuneral.com
