SPENCER - Estherville Lincoln Central's Jack Brashear earned all-conference honors after his round of 83 at the 2014 Lakes Golf Tournament at Spencer on Monday.

However, the Midgets needed to shave a few more strokes as they finished sixth on the day with a 341-four strokes away from placing fourth.

Spencer edged Emmetsburg for the conference title 326 to 328 followed by Storm Lake with 332. Western Christian finished fourth with a 338 followed by LeMars with 340, ELC with 341 with Spirit Lake (374) and Cherokee (377) bringing up the rear.

"After a really tough day on Friday, it would have been easy for these guys to throw in the towel for the year, but they showed up to compete today," said ELC?coach Dave Van Roekel. "Congratulations to Jack Brashear for making All-Conference with his eighth- place finish! Both of Jack's rounds started poorly, but he never quit, and it paid off with an 83."

Brashear had nine-hole rounds of 44 and 39. Chris Seylar and Corey Reeves each shot 85s with Seylar having rounds of 44 and 41 while Reeves posted rounds of 40 and 45.

ELC hosts girls tourney

Hosting the 2014 Lakes Conference Girls Golf Meet for the first time, Estherville Lincoln Central didn't fare quite as well as they might have hoped.

With one senior starter-Lauren Moeller-missing from the lineup due to illness, the Midgets finished sixth overall with a 495.

Tia Bernholtz led ELC with a 120 with nine-hole rounds of 62 and 58. Junior Maddie Rimmer stepped into the lineup for Moeller and had the next best round of 121 with nine-hole scores of 59 and 62. Gracie Schnell finished with a 126 (61 and 64) an Megan Brunskill shot a 129 (66 and 63). Non-counting scores for ELC were a 136 (66 and 70) by Jordan Origer and a 140 by Olivia Truog (69 and 71).

"Our girls did a nice job considering the weather," said ELC coach Kevin Richardson "Maddie, Gracie, and Megan had good solid rounds and are starting to be more consistent with lower scores. Tia struggled today getting off to a bad start and never really coming back. We had really hoped she could make the all-conference team. This past week she had some great scores in the 40s and thought she could carry that over. Lauren was sick with the flu today and couldn't play. It was nice for the girls to come back and beat a couple of conference teams in the tournament."

Emmetsburg ran away with the conference tournament champion behind meet medalist Ashton Connelly's 84 and runner-up Taylor Knight's 90. The E'Hawks shot a 384 followed by Storm Lake with 413, Spencer with 416, Western Christian with 425, Spirit Lake with 468, ELC, Cherokee with 543 and LeMars with 552.

Ellie Katzfey led Spirit Lake with a 107 with Kristen Salzwedel shooting a 113 while Taylor Sieperda and Macy Smith each shot 124s. Non-counting scores for Spirit Lake were a 126 by Callan Hinn and a 135 by Lauren Laven.
