DES MOINES - Chase Bonner came ready to go at the 2014 State Track Meet on Thursday. The Estherville Lincoln Central junior unleashed a career-best throw of 51 feet, 7 inches-3 feet farther than he had thrown before-to place fifth in Class 2A.
"I just had a good practice coming in and got everyone right on the one throw and that's what I needed to do," said Bonner.
Bonner's previous best throw came at the district state-qualifying meet as his throw of 48 feet, 5 1/2 inches placed him 12th among Class 2A shot putters entering the state meet.
ELC junior Chase Bonner completed his best-ever throw in the shot put to place fifth at state on Thursday.
CMB, Baxter's Zach Samson won the 2A field with a throw of 56 feet, 5 inches, nearly 2 feet farther than second place Marcus Boldy of Panorama, who threw 54 6 1/4 inches.
Meanwhile, ELC's 4x800-meter relay team also ran well-a season-best time of 8 minutes, 16.58 seconds-but not quite good enough to earn a medal as the quartet placed 15th. That foursome was Cody Davis, Lee Christensen, Rodrick Fuller and Joe Heinrichs.
"That was our season-best time by 5 seconds," said ELC coach Dick Barrett. "Cody ran a strong race-he and Rod both ran their career-best."
