DES MOINES - Running his fourth and final state event, Estherville Lincoln Central senior Joe Heinrichs wrapped up his high school career with a 16th-place finish in the 1600-meter run on Saturday.

He finished the event in 4 minutes, 37.05 seconds-his best time by about a second. The top eight medalists all ran the event in under 4:28 with South Hardin senior Tim Rose winning by nearly four seconds over the Class 2A field in 4:20.90.

"I'm proud of Joe's effort-not many guys competed in four events at state," said ELC coach Dick Barrett.

"He was also sick the whole weekend," the coach said, adding that Heinrichs had allergies.

Heinrichs had helped the medley relay team to a seventh-place medal and new school record earlier in the meet and was also part of the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays. Barrett said Heinrichs has been selected to compete in the track all-star meet.

Overall, coach Barrett was pleased with the performance of his state qualifiers.

"The big progress was Chase Bonner in the shot put and the medley relay which bettered its time by six seconds," he said. "I'm real proud of the team. I've got four state place winners returning. I saw a lot of progress by the underclassmen this year."

Those returning next season are Bonner, Dan Christensen, Kyle DeVary and Justin Heinrichs. Senior Cody Davis was part of the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
