Warriors shut out Bulldogs

LAKE MILLS - North Union opened its 2014 campaign with a 5-0 shutout over Lake Mills on Tuesday.

Junior pitcher Peyton Oleson pitched the two hit shutout as she struck out nine batters and walked one.

The Warriors finished with eight hits on the night, doing the bulk of the damage in a three-run seventh inning.

Autumn Boland and Dena Looft both went 2-3 at the plate with Boland driving in two runs and also recording her first home run of the season. Taylor Mathine, Kyarsten Mullen, Anna Ingalls and Emma Engelby each finished with one hit. Mathine and Engelby each had an RBI.

NU pounds Cardinals, 18-1

GARNER - North Union pounded out 12 hits in an 18-1, six-inning victory over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura on Wednesday.

With a comfortable 8-1 lead through five innings, the Warriors broke out with a 10-run sixth inning.

For the second straight night, Warrior pitcher Peyton Oleson gave up just two hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.

The Cardinals scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning, but still trailed 3-1.

At the plate, Sarah Rolling finished 4-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Autumn Boland finished 2-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Kyarsten Mullen also was 2-4 with one RBI.

Dena Looft, Anna Ingalls, Taylor Mathine and Breanna Anderson each finished with one hit. Ingalls, Mathine, Anderson and Looft each had two RBIs while Mullen and Aly Bierstedt each had one RBI.

E'Hawks take down Warriors

EMMETSBURG - North Union (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season as Emmetsburg defeated the Warriors 8-5 on Thursday.

North Union held a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when the E'Hawks scored four runs to take the lead for good. The hosts then held the Warriors scoreless for the final three innings while scoring two insurance runs in the sixth inning.

Peyton Oleson took the loss. In six innings she gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

The Warriors finished with nine hits led by Dena Looft and Sarah Rolling, who both went 2-3 with a home run. Looft had three RBIs and Rolling had one. Autumn Boland and Taylor Mathine each finished 2-4 and Oleson was 1-3.

North Union hosts its first home game Tuesday against St. Edmond of Fort Dodge, then travels to Forest City on Wednesday and returns home to host North Iowa on Thursday.
