Estherville Lincoln Central showed resilience in battling back from a 6-1 deficit to defeat Western Christian 7-6.
Tied 6-6 entering the final inning, an unassisted double play by shortstop Megan Jensen helped prevent the visitors from scoring.
With one out and runners at first and second, Jensen caught a fly ball and dove to tag out the runner who was standing off second base.
In the bottom of the inning, ELC pitcher Liz Brashear helped her cause with the game-winning hit.
Rylee Miller and Jensen led off the inning with consecutive singles and Carson Gjerde laid down a sacrifice bunt to put the runners in scoring position. Caitlyn Clayton was hit by a pitch to load the bases with Brashear singling on the first pitch to seal the win.
Western Christian scored three runs each in the third and fourth innings.
ELC had scored one run in the third when the Midgets went to work. The hosts scored two runs in the fourth after Jensen and Gjerde led off with singles and a passed ball and a Wolfpack error.
ELC tied the game in the fifth with Alyssa Friesner drawing a walk and Miller reaching on an error Gjerde had a two-RBI single in the inning.
On the mound, Brashear struck out six batters and walked one while giving up eight hits.
ELC stumbles against Cherokee
CHEROKEE - After giving up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, Estherville Lincoln Central's defense shut down the Braves. But that was all the hosts would need on Monday as the Midgets pushed just one run across in a 3-1 loss to start the 2014 Lakes Conference schedule.
Liz Brashear took the loss as she gave up the three runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
ELC also had six hits with Caitlyn Clayton going 2-3 while Carson Gjerde and Sarah Schacherer each went 1-2 and Rachel Bates and Alyssa Friesner each went 1-3. Gjerde scored the lone run for the Midgets.
The Estherville Lincoln Central Junior Varsity Softball Team split its games this past week winning 9-3 over Cherokee on Monday and falling 4-1 to Western Christian on Wednesday.
In Monday's game, Carson Gjerde pitched three innings and Morgan White pitched two. At the plate, Hallie Jensen was 2-2 with a home run, Gabby Heckard was 1-2 with a double and MaKayla Howard was 1-1 with a double and two RBIs.
On Wednesday, Gjerde struck out 10 batters while giving three hits and four walks in the loss.
At the plate, Jensen was 1-3 and Heckard, Rylee Miller and Howard each went 1-2.
