HULL - After giving up an early 2-0 lead, Estherville Lincoln Central rallied to defeat Western Christian 5-3 on Friday.
The Midgets improve to 12-2 on the season and 6-1 in the Lakes Conference.
"We had a sloppy first inning and made a couple mental and physical mistakes," said ELC coach Lee Evans. "Austin (Egeland) threw well for us and kept us in the game by keeping them off balance. In the course of the game, he got us some big outs."
ELC’s Alec Wycoff had a key hit against Western Christian in the Midgets 5-3 win over the Wolfpack in Hull on Friday.
Egeland finished the night with six strikeouts while giving up just one walk. Only two of the runs were earned.
Evans said the Midgets went to 'small ball' to scratch out some runs.
After giving up the two runs in the first inning, ELC's Dan Christensen singled and Riley Strenge drew a walk. Christensen scored on a single by Alec Wycoff. Billy Snyder reached on a fielder's choice as Strenge scored to tie the game.
In the fifth inning, Corey Reeves was hit by a pinch and bunt singles by Christensen and Strenge loaded the bases. Wycoff hit into a 1-2-3- double play, but with runners on second and third, Western Christian elected to walk Billy Snyder to load the bases. A walk to Austin Egeland drove in the go ahead run. Tim Greving then hit a ball to the shortstop. An error allowed Strenge and Snyder to score.
Christensen finished 2-2 while Wycoff was 1-4 with an RBI and Strenge was 1-2.
In junior varsity play, ELC lost 8-7.
Alex Miller took the loss as he pitched 1 2/ innings and gave up five earned runs and walked eight batters. Lee Christensen pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on five hits.
At the plate, Christensen was 1-1 and scored twice. Evan Olesen was 1-3 with a run and a stolen base and Lucas Gardner was 1-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run.
