Wedebrand denied parole

July 4, 2014
Estherville News

SPENCER?- A man convicted in the 1997 murder of Estherville teenager Gregory "Sky" Erickson will not be paroled this year.

In May, a judge re-sentenced Ryan Wedebrand for his role in the kidnapping and killing of Erickson. Wedebrand, who was 16-years-old at the time the crime was committed, was originally sentenced to life in prison.

In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sentencing juveniles to life in prison without parole was unconstitutional. The Iowa Supreme Court sent Wedebrand's case back to the lower court for resentencing.

Clay County Judge David Lester changed Wedebrand's sentence to include the possibility of parole.

Last week, Wedebrand went before the Iowa Parole Board for the first time and was denied. He will be up for consideration again next year.
