It's baseball playoff time and Estherville Lincoln Central and the other five teams in the Class 2A District 2 bracket get a chance to start with a clean slate.
The Midgets will host all the district games with action starting tonight at Hess-Limberg Field as Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (12-8) takes on Sibley-Ocheyedan (0-16) at 5 p.m. and Okoboji (6-15) faces Sheldon (7-13) at 7 p.m.
ELC (14-9 overall) receive a first-round bye and will play the Okoboji/Sheldon winner at 7 p.m., Tuesday. Emmetsburg (15-11) will play the HMS/S-O winner at 5 p.m., Tuesday.
The district final will be held at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 19 in Estherville.
Looking at ELC's possible first opponent, Sheldon and Okoboji have played each other twice with the Orabs taking each of the games in the Siouxland Conference, winning 15-4 on June 4 and 2-1 on June 25.
The Midgets enter tournament play batting .247 with Sheldon batting .246 and Okoboji batting .270.
Three ELC players are batting over .300 for the season-Zach Humble at .313, Austin Egeland at .301 and Riley Strenge at .300. Trey Jacobson is close behind at .294
Three pitchers have done the majority of the work on the mound this season with Austin Egeland pitching 36 1/3 innings with a 2.31 earned run average and a 3-3 record. He has 30 strikeouts, 13 walks and four hit batters. Billy Snyder has pitched 36 innings and has a 3.11 ERA and 2-4 record. He has 31 strikeouts with 18 walks and three hit batters. Tim Greving is 2-0 in six starts with a 1.95 ERA in 28 2/3 innings. He has 26 strikeouts, 12 walks and one hit batter.
Evan Olesen is 3-1 on the year with one start and has an ERA of 2.68 in 15 2/3 innings.
