SWEA CITY - Class 2A No. 7 North Union couldn't come up with the hits against Belmond-Klemme and a couple of defensive errors allowed the Broncos to come away with a 2-1 upset on Wednesday.
The Warriors (26-6 on the season) managed just three hits on the night against B-K sophomore Mackenzie Tenold.
With the score tied 1-1 and the bases loaded with one out, leadoff hitter Keyra Cook's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave Belmond-Klemme the upset victory.
North Union had the opportunity to strike first in the top of the fourth inning as Payton Oleson was grazed by a pitch and courtesy runner Shaylee Hanning stole second base. A double by Bre Anderson to right-center field appeared to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. But Bronco right fielder Natalee Dippel's ensuing throw to second caught the eighth-grader who had rounded the bag before Hanning reached the plate.
With one out, Taylor Walrod singled. Courtesy runner Vannessa Wessels took second when Tenold reached via a wild pitch on a strikeout. Waldod scored on Rebecca Soma's single to center. North Union tagged out courtesy runner Logann Elkin trying to reach third base on the play.
The Warriors finally got on the board in the top of the sixth as Kyarsten Mullen led off with a double to left-center and moved to third on the sacrifice bunt by Autumn Boland. On the squeeze bunt by Dena Looft, Mullen beat Tenold's throw to her catcher.
North Union ace Peyton Oleson retired six straight batters after giving up a leadoff walk in the sixth inning-four via strikeout. But in the bottom of the seventh, Tenold reached on a Warrior error with courtesy runner Elkin moving to second on Soma's bunt that did not produce an out. Oleson recorded her 10th strikeout, but a missed tag on a fielder's choice loaded the bases for Cook.
Oleson allowed the two runs on five hits with just the one walk in the loss.
At the plate for North Union, Erica Anderson was 1-2-a two-out single in the top of the seventh-while Mullen and Anderson each were 1-3.
