Ask a Trooper: Fine amounts

July 18, 2014
By Trooper Vince Kurtz - Iowa State Patrol Safety Education , Estherville News

Q: What are the fine amounts for these violations (listed in the answer)? Perhaps if people knew how much a fine costs, they would be less likely to commit the traffic violation.

A: Deterrence has always been one of the goals of traffic enforcement, thereby reducing the number of crashes and fatalities. The idea is that as the public observes patrol cars on the road, they will be reminded to drive safely within the law. This also applies to traffic citations. After being stopped for a violation, the person is less likely to repeat the offense and more likely to tell others about their experience. Hence, the violator and the public are deterred from future violations.

Fine amounts are part of this equation as well. Over the years, the cost of the actual violation and court costs have gone up. (See box below.)

On behalf of the men and women of the Iowa State Patrol, have a safe summer driving season.
