ALTA - North Union stormed past St. Mary's of Storm Lake with four runs in the third inning and then added three more runs in both the fourth and sixth innings on the way to an 11-3 victory on Tuesday.
North Union (11-16) faces Alta-Aurelia (17-11) at 7 p.m., Thursday in Alta. The winner faces either Bishop Garrigan or West Bend-Mallard at 7 p.m., Saturday at Garrigan's field in Algona.
The Warriors trailed 2-1 when Panthers' starter Ryan Peters began struggling. With on out, Peters walked Colin Runksmeier and Spencer Ricke. While Runksmeier was tagged out trying to steal third, Corey Vaske and Alex Krantz both singled with Ricke scoring when Logan Hellman drew a walk. Peters was replaced by Aaron Miller, but a single by Carter Engelby brought two runs home and Hellman scored on a passed ball as North Union took a 5-2 lead.
In the fourth inning, Miller couldn't get an out, giving up a lead off walk and then Cody Runksmeier reached on an error. Walks to Colin Runksmeier and Ricke brought home one run. Vaske then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score another. A single by Krantz drove in another run.
The Warriors took advantage of more walks in the sixth inning. After a one-out single by Colin Runksmeier, Ricke and Vaske both drew walks. One run scored as Krantz grounded out to third base. Two runs came home on a single by Parker Oleson.
Colin Runksmeier earned the win as he went 6 2/3 innings giving up three earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Krantz faced one batter, forcing a groundout to end the game.
At the plate for the Warriors, Krantz was 2-4 with two RBIs, Oleson and Ricke each were 1-1 with two RBIs, Engelby was 1-3 with two RBIs, Vaske was 1-2 with an RBI and Colin Runksmeier was 1-2.
