He died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014.
Barry, the son of Zell and Theone Berryhill, was born in Webster City on July 28, 1938. According to his amusing story, despite being heavily argued by family, he states his birth took place in an elevator. Barry moved to Estherville when he was eight years old, where he was raised and then lived the rest of his life. He graduated from Estherville High School in 1956.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Griffin on Sept. 15, 1973. The couple made their home in Estherville where they raised their family. Barry retired in 1999 on his 61st birthday after 25 years at John Morrell Foods and then 10 years at Butterfield Foods. He proudly boosts about the beer he drank on his final car ride home after his last day of work. To him, that kicked off his next adventure in life, retirement. Barry was an avid sports fan. He rarely missed a Twins, Vikings or Iowa Hawkeye football or basketball game. He was also a historian, with a specific fondness of United States history. Because of his considerable knowledge, friends and family would often reach out to Barry to settle disputes before the age of Google.
Left to cherish Barry's memory are his loving wife of 40 years, Shirley Berryhill; his children, Craig Berryhill of Estherville, Jeff Berryhill and his wife, Samantha, of Minneapolis and Christy Berryhill, of Minneapolis; sister-in-law, Gayle Berryhill of Newton; and his loyal pets, Daisy and Marley.
Barry will be missed by all family and loved ones. He will now rest in peace with his parents, Zell and Theone Berryhill; his sister, Rita Livezey; and his brothers, Harold Berryhill and Bob Berryhill.
A celebration of Barry's life will follow the services at Mother Nature's in the back conference room. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Emmet County Animal Shelter, 333 W. 2nd St. North, Estherville, IA 51334 in care of: Barry Berryhill.
