Thumbs up, thumbs down

Estherville News

Thumbs up to all the new teachers joining Estherville Lincoln Central, North Union, Graettinger-Terril, Spirit Lake and other area schools this school year. You have chosen one of the most important careers there is - educating and guiding our youth. In our busy society in which both parents work in most families, a teacher can see his or her student even more hours each day than a parent during the school year. This makes a teacher's job more important than ever.

We hope all parents take the opportunity to meet their children's teachers and that they can support each other in doing what's best for kids.

Thumbs up to Don Heerdt on taking the interim position of Emmet County supervisor. Don was sworn in Tuesday. Don has jumped in to tackle an interim supervisor appointment before, in addition to serving for several terms himself. He has shown countless times that he is a dedicated public servant who wants what's best for Emmet County.

Thumbs up and congratulations to the Estherville Fire Department on receiving its new rescue truck. they deserve a lot of credit for getting the money for the truck through pancake breakfasts and an ongoing fund drive. A big thumbs up should go as well to everyone who donated toward the truck.

Thumbs up to Estherville Lincoln Central and Iowa Lakes Community College for holding the back-to-school bash Wednesday night. This is a great way for school and community to come together.

Thumbs up to all parents who took their children in for their first day of school on Thursday. It has to be pretty hard to see those little ones going into those doors for the first time. And we should probably give a thumbs up and encouragement as well to the kids.

Thumbs up in advance to all the Chamber members who are volunteering to go help with the facelift of the Chamber building 5 p.m. Tuesday. They're going to remove interior wallpaper and paint the exterior window wells.

Thumbs up to Comfortec for installing a new air conditioner at the Estherville News. It works great, and we love you guys.

Thumbs up to Eric Milburn for his nearly 35 years of service to the Estherville Police Department. Good luck in your retirement.
