Iowa Lakes CC levy explained

August 22, 2014
Estherville News

Letter to the Editor,

On September 9, area voters have the opportunity to go to the polls to renew the Iowa Lakes Community College Equipment Replacement Levy.

The current replacement levy will expire June 30, 2015, and this renewal will not result in an increase in taxes.

The equipment levy renewal is six cents per $1,000 of property valuation. With the current property tax rollback, this amounts to $3.26 annually on property valued at $100,000. That's less than the average price of one gallon of gas.

What it generates for the college is around $360,000 annually. The funds have made a positive impact in every program at each of our campuses in all five counties.

The levy can only be used to purchase and upgrade equipment and technology.

One example of this is the funds were used to develop a new state-of-the-art, high definition video conferencing system. Those funds leveraged federal dollars for a United States Department of Agriculture Rural Telecommunications project. This TV system serves all of our campuses and also connects nine area high schools to the College, to provide high school students access to college level coursework while still enrolled in high school.

A college committee invests in equipment and technology which is critical to the education of our students not only for today's jobs but well into the future.

Absentee ballots can be requested at any time and advanced voting is available at your county auditor's office.

The Iowa Lakes Community College Board of Trustees and I thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Valerie Newhouse

President

Iowa Lakes Community College
